WHAT IS AN AMERICAN BAPTIST CHURCH?
This story is told as a joke:
The rabbi begins, "Thus saith the Lord.."
The priest begins, "As the Church has always said..."
The Baptist begins, "Now brothers and sisters, it seems to me..."
In an article in Christianity Today, historian Martin Marty formed the word "Baptistification" to describe the influence Baptist principles have had in the United States. He says that the passion for "Freedom" is a major reason why there is so much diversity in Baptist life.
Four Fragile Freedoms have been identified as foundational to Baptists:
1. Bible Freedom: each person is free and responsible to read, study, and follow.
2. Soul Freedom: each person has the right and responsibility to deal with God directly without the intervention of creed or clergy.
3. Church Freedom: each local church is free to choose its own leaders and order its own worship and mission. No two churches are exactly alike.
4. Religious Freedom: this is the historic Baptist affirmation of freedom of religion, freedom for religion, freedom from religion. The separation of Church and State was important for those escaping the persecution of the State Church of England.
POINT PLEASANT COMMUNITY BAPTIST CHURCH holds a Worship Service each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The fourth Sunday of each month is Spectacular Children's Sunday, with a special children's sermon, a puppet show, and craft. ALL ARE WELCOME HERE!
